Book Review – "B-Movie Attack" by Alan Spencer

There is a lot to be said about B-movies.  While many people may complain about the low quality, the shoddy effects, or the general cheesiness of these films, many others realize that these are the things that make them great in their own right.  In B-Movie Reels, Alan Spencer gives us everything great about B-Movies while not skimping on the quality of his prose just because of the source material.  In B-Movie Attack, Spencer shows us that he was only beginning.

No B-movie monster stays dead forever!

It was supposed to be a fun screening of an old schlocky horror film at a university auditorium. Unfortunately, Morgue Vampire Tramps Find Temptation at the Funeral Home was possessed by demons able to bring the hideous title characters to life. Now the vampires are alive…and they want company. After gaining access to a vault filled with horror films confiscated by film censors, the vampires have set out to unleash an army of monsters on Chicago with each reel they show. Who will survive an invasion of creatures from B-movies like The Intestinator, Slasher Girls, and The 500 Foot Hooker? And what will be left of them?

The stakes are raised in B-Movie Attack as Spencer takes the story out of a small, isolated town and into a large city.  With the change in scenery comes a huge increase in the potential number of victims and Spencer makes great use of them all.  The action never lets up from the moment the rollercoaster of terror starts to take the plunge down the first hill.  The gore flows through the pages and with Spencer’s talent with words, you can see every moment of it as clearly as if it were jumping off the page right at you.  That doesn’t mean that Spencer doesn’t take the time to give us characters that are well fleshed out.

While the cast of regular characters is not large, mainly we get monsters and monster fodder, this actually works as a strength in the story.  Instead of spreading out the page count with a large number of characters, we are given focus on several in detail so that we actually manage to care about what happens to each of them in the burgeoning madness.  Not that this stops Spencer from treating them as dispensable.

Overall, Alan Spencer’s B-Movie Attack is great fun that would fit as well on the screen as it does on the written page.  Spencer maintains the spirit of B-movies throughout his tale, making this a must-read for any fan of the genre.  So let’s check out the Rage Circus breakdown.
